Notes on Estimated Costs for International Students
  • Students on student (F-1) visas pay the out-of-state tuition rate. Immigrants who are permanent residents may be eligible to pay in-state tuition if they satisfy New Jersey residence requirements.
  • The cost of a year at Rutgers University for all students depends upon a number of variables, including the college you choose to attend, the meal plan you select, and where you choose to live. The above chart indicates the approximate cost of a year at Rutgers for international students attending our Camden, Newark, or New Brunswick campuses.
  • International students often incur additional personal and summer expenses. These figures differ somewhat from those in the expense section of the application. The figure above is a conservative estimate of what one might spend for laundry, recreation, medical care, and other personal items. This figure does not include travel to and from the U.S.
  • Students should bring adequate funds to cover living expenses during vacations. During Christmas and spring breaks one residence hall may remain open to accommodate international students; however, this is not guaranteed.
  • Fees are subject to change by the Rutgers Board of Governors, and other costs may increase due to inflation. The student cannot deduct fees from their documentation.

Financial Documentation

For students intending to hold a student (F-1) visa:

  • You must submit the International Student Financial Statement (ISFS).

    • Government regulations require students who will hold a student (F-1) visa to prove to the university that they will be financially supported for the entire time they intend to be enrolled. For this purpose, you must submit the International Student Financial Statement.
    • Part II of this statement must be completed in its entirety. You must show assured support for each year you expect to attend Rutgers University.
    • The International Student Financial Statement and all supporting documents must be signed and dated no more than nine months prior to your projected enrollment at Rutgers. You will be asked for updated funding information if required.

  • Financial documents must be originals.
  • Documentation of financial resources must be on bank letterhead.
  • Monetary denomination must be listed in U.S. dollars only.
