Admission by Examination

You may apply for Admission by Examination if you have not completed high school. Candidates for Admission by Examination apply by taking the SAT or ACT and three SAT subject area tests of the College Entrance Examination Board, including English and mathematics. The third examination may be taken in a subject of your choice, unless you are applying to the College of Nursing, the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, or the School of Engineering. For these schools, the third subject must be a science. ACT scores must include the optional Writing Test.

Applicants who do not have the required academic subjects for schools on the Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick campuses may be admitted on the basis of their scores on the relevant SAT subject area tests, or they may be required to make up specific subject deficiencies.

Early Graduation

Students who plan to apply as high school juniors must be competitive for admission, present strong high school records, and demonstrate readiness for college. If you will not have a high school diploma by the time of enrollment, apply for Admission by Examination (see above) and submit a transcript that includes your grades for the first half of your final year.

GED Holders

Applicants who have earned a General Educational Development (GED) certificate must submit an official report of their GED examination scores as well as transcripts from any high school(s) attended. First-year applicants with a GED generally apply for Admission by Examination (see above). However, for exceptionally strong applicants, the SAT subject area tests may be waived.

Home Schooled Applicants

Students who are home schooled should submit SAT or ACT scores as well as transcripts, syllabi, and/or other documents relevant to academic work completed. Please also attach an outline of your academic curriculum and indicate whether it has been conducted under an accredited program. Please include your full name and, if possible, your identification number on all attachments.

Previously and Currently Enrolled Rutgers Students

Previously Enrolled

Former Rutgers University students who want to apply for readmission to a Rutgers school they previously attended as matriculating students should contact the academic dean at that school for readmission procedures.

Students wishing to apply to a Rutgers school other than the one in which they were previously matriculated and who are not matriculated at Rutgers University during the semester immediately preceding the semester for which they seek to transfer should use the university undergraduate application.

Currently Enrolled

Students matriculated at Rutgers University during the semester immediately preceding the semester for which they seek to transfer should follow the school-to-school transfer application procedures.

If at Rutgers you have taken only summer session, winter session, or other courses on a non-matriculating (non-degree-seeking) basis and you now wish to pursue an undergraduate degree, please use the Undergraduate Admissions Application.
