Completing the Application Form

Full Legal Name (Question 1):
Please use your full legal name on the application, in all communications with the undergraduate admissions office, and on any credentials you submit to Rutgers University.

Email Address (Question 6):
Please provide an email address so that we can confirm receipt of your application and your application fee when submitted online. The Office of University Undergraduate Admissions will communicate with you via email throughout the application process.

Previous Name (Question 7):
If your name has ever changed or if your academic credentials might arrive under a different name, please provide that name. This will help us match credentials to your application.

Permanent Legal Address (Question 8):
Please enter your permanent address exactly as it should appear on any mail sent to you.

Mailing address (Question 9):
Please enter your mailing address exactly as it should appear on any mail sent to you. If your mailing address is temporary and different from your permanent legal address, please provide a "Valid Until" date. After that date, we will send mail to your permanent legal address.  Note: You will be responsible for notifying us of changes in your mailing address, which can be submitted online via Your Rutgers Status.

Telephone Numbers (Question 10):
You may provide up to two U.S. phone numbers where we may reach you.

Citizenship (Question 11):

A. U.S. Citizens
Select the category indicating if you are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or non-USA citizen/green card holder.

B. Permanent Resident
If you are a permanent resident (green card holder), please provide your INS Alien Registration Number, date of issue, and date of expiration of your green card. If you have the I-551, I-151, or I-551C stamp, provide the registration number and the issue and expiration dates on the stamp. Neither an Employment Authorization Card nor your application for a green card substitutes for a valid green card.

C. Non U.S. Citizens
If you are neither a U.S. citizen nor a permanent resident (green card holder), indicate your country of citizenship and select the type of visa you will hold while attending Rutgers University. If you already hold this visa, include the date of expiration.

If you have applied for and are awaiting approval regarding permanent resident (green card) status, code your visa status as SP.

If you have an I-94 with one of the following designations: refugee, asylum granted, or indefinite parole, code your visa status as RF.

Semester for Which You Are Applying (Question 12):
Select only one box. You should select only college(s) that offer the program(s) appropriate to your needs. All schools of Rutgers University admit students for the fall (September) semester, but not all admit students for the spring (January) semester. Click here to view school choices, including those that permit part-time or non-matriculating status.

Applicant Category (Question 13):
Select your category after reviewing the descriptions below:

First Year:
You are currently enrolled in high school, even if you will have completed college credits while in high school. (If you are a high school student and have college courses in progress or completed, your college transcripts will be evaluated for possible Rutgers credit even though you will enter as a first-year student.)

OR

You have graduated from high school and have never attended college,

OR

You have been enrolled in college but will have completed fewer than 12 academic college credits by the time you enroll at Rutgers University.

Transfer:
You have already earned a high school diploma or its equivalent and will have completed 12 or more academic college credits since high school graduation, but have not yet achieved an associate’s, an R.N., or a bachelor’s degree.

Associate’s Degree:
You will have obtained an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university before you enroll at Rutgers.

Bachelor’s Degree:
You will have achieved a bachelor’s degree before you enroll at Rutgers.

Registered Nurse:
You are a licensed registered nurse. All RNs should select this category, not the associate’s or bachelor’s degree button.

Full Time or Part Time (Question 14):
Please indicate whether you intend to enroll on a full-time or a part-time basis.

Note: Immigration regulations require that student visa holders enroll full time. Therefore, student visa holders may only apply for full-time status.

Working Toward a Rutgers Degree (Question 15):
Please indicate whether you plan to work toward a Rutgers degree or take courses under non-degree (non-matriculating) status.

Note: Immigration regulations require that student visa holders follow a course of study leading to a degree. Therefore, student visa holders may only apply for degree-seeking (matriculating) status.

Selecting a School (Question 17):
Select up to three schools. Make sure your school selections offer academic programs that interest you. You can view brief descriptions of each school by clicking on the school name.

Maximum Admissions Consideration: If we cannot admit you to your original school choices, we will consider you for other appropriate schools in the university before notifying you of our decisions.

Selecting an Area or Interest (Question 17):
Choose an appropriate academic interest code for each of your school choices.

Undecided? If you are a first-year student applying to Arts and Sciences in Camden, Newark, or New Brunswick and are undecided about your interests, you can use the undeclared liberal arts code: 000. Being “undeclared” will not affect our admission decisions; most first-year students are undecided.

If you are applying to one of the professional schools, you must select an academic interest code.

All transfer students are required to indicate their academic interest.

New Jersey Residency (Question 19): If you expect to pay New Jersey tuition rates, you must first read the Residency Policy and be sure to provide complete answers in this section. You will be assessed a nonresident tuition charge if your application lacks required information. We reserve the right to request additional documentation supporting New Jersey residency.

High School Education Information (Questions 20-25):

Date of High School Graduation or GED (Question 20):
Please indicate the date you will graduate from high school/receive a GED. If you will not graduate from high school or attain a GED prior to enrolling at Rutgers, please select that statement.

High School (Question 21):
Use the “Select” button to enter the names and locations of all schools you have attended beginning with the secondary or high school(s) you most recently attended or from which you have graduated. If you cannot find your school on the list, please select “School Is Not Listed Below” and then type the name and location of the school.

Are You Home Schooled? (Question 22):
If you are home schooled (secondary education conducted in your home), please submit SAT or ACT scores as well as transcripts, syllabi, and any other documents relevant to academic work completed. Please also submit an outline of your academic curriculum and tell us whether it has been conducted under an accredited home-schooling program.

If you have already taken the test, indicate your most recent test date. If you plan to take the test in the future, indicate your planned test date.

Previous Colleges (Questions 29):
Use the “Select” button to enter the names and locations of all colleges you have attended beginning with the most recent. If you cannot find your college on the list, please select “School Is Not Listed Below” and then type the name and location of the school.

Transfer Credit Evaluation

Your course work completed at other accredited institutions will be evaluated after your acceptance to a school at Rutgers University. Generally, students receive credit for courses equivalent to those offered by our schools, provided a grade of C or better has been earned. However, the individual courses are evaluated by the faculty (in the case of direct course equivalency) and by the school (for the transfer of credit when a direct departmental equivalent does not exist) before credit is granted.

If you are transferring from a New Jersey community college, you can obtain course equivalencies from NJ Transfer. An official college transcript showing the courses, grades, and credits earned is required for transfer credit consideration.

Advanced Placement

You may request advanced placement and/or degree credit on the basis of results on the College Entrance Examination Board Advanced Placement Examinations. Advanced placement and degree credit are usually awarded for grades of 5 and 4. Please have Advanced Placement scores sent directly to Rutgers from the Educational Testing Service using our College Board code: 2765.
